How to Test-Drive a Used Car: A 15-Minute Route

A structured quarter-hour — cold start, warm-up to the fan cycle, braking from about 50 km/h, a drift check and a post-drive look underneath — beats an hour of aimless driving.

The drive starts before the car moves. Ask the seller not to run the engine before you arrive, then start it stone cold: rattle, blue smoke or a hunting idle at cold start are named failures, and a pre-warmed engine hides all three.

Minutes 3-8 are the warm-up. Drive gently and wait for the cooling fan to cycle; a fan that runs by the end of the route tells you the cooling system is managing heat, while one that never comes — or a temperature needle that climbs — is a problem to name before money is discussed.

Minutes 8-10 are the braking check: a firm stop from about 50 km/h. The car should stop straight, without pulling to one side and without pulsation through the pedal. Pull or pulsation sends you back to the static brake lines — pads due at 3 mm of friction material, rotors due when the edge wear lip runs deeper than 1-2 mm.

Minutes 10-13 are the drift check. On a straight, level stretch the car should hold its line without constant correction; a car that drifts puts the tires and alignment in question, which is where the tire guide's tread and DOT readings come back into play.

The last two minutes happen parked. Look underneath while everything is still hot: fresh drips after a drive point to active leaks that a cold car in a driveway will not show. Then score the drive against the 22-line checklist on this site — the road lines are numbers 6 and 19 through 22 — and let the thresholds, not the feel of the seat, make the decision.

  • Minutes 0-3 — cold start: engine stone cold; rattle, smoke or a hunting idle are named failures.
  • Minutes 3-8 — warm-up: drive gently until the cooling fan cycles.
  • Minutes 8-10 — braking: a firm stop from about 50 km/h; pull or pedal pulsation fails.
  • Minutes 10-13 — drift check: on a straight, level stretch the car should hold its line.
  • Minutes 13-15 — return and look underneath: fresh drips after the drive mean active leaks.
